Meet Johann Pachelbel and Canon in D

Welcome to your very first Sound Bite! I am so excited to share this journey with you. If you've not spent much time getting to know baroque and classical era music, you are in for a treat. Although the names 'baroque' and 'classical' may sound formal or stuffy, the music is not! This is some of the most enjoyable, fun, playful music in history! I have done my best to choose a wide variety of pieces, instruments, settings, and presentation types throughout this year of Sound Bites, and I've kept your children in mind when making my selections. I hope your family will enjoy Sound Bites as much as I have imagined they will!

Johann Pachelbel was born in 1653 in Germany. He started music lessons when he was a child, and eventually he became a very accomplished organist. In fact, he wrote over 200 pieces for the organ. He also wrote choral pieces, fugues, and many other works.

Today's Sound Bite features Pachelbel Canon in D Major, which is one of the most famous Baroque-era pieces. I am pretty sure you will be familiar with this tune!

I selected this video because of the original baroque-era instruments being used, and because I thought it was interesting to hear this song at a somewhat faster pace than we are used to hearing it today. What did you think of it?
