Lesson 1: Colonial Music & Folk Traditions (1700s–1770s)

In early Colonial America, music was woven into daily life through community gatherings, church services, and storytelling, with settlers bringing European folk songs and hymns that gradually developed a uniquely American character. Families sang ballads to pass down stories, used fiddles and fifes for dances and celebrations, and relied on psalm singing in churches to express faith and unity.

In this lesson, students will explore how colonial music reflected simplicity, survival, and community values, and be sure to try some simple colonial dance steps!
