A Devotional by Tauna Meyer

A Devotional on "Blessed Assurance" from Tauna Meyer~

“Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blessed…”

As the words passed over my lips during worship service, I thought about the woman in our group who recently lost her husband, the family who had been struggling with unemployment for so long, the friend whose life had been invaded by incurable disease.

Is this their story? Is this their song? Is it mine?

Yes, it is. And it’s your story, too!

It is the story of all those who are in Christ, born of the Spirit and washed in His blood. Not because of any great piousness or effort on our part, but because of His work in our lives — because of the reality of who God is and what He is doing in us.

I love singing Blessed Assurance. It is like climbing up the mountainside of our circumstances and of our trembling hearts and declaring reality over it all, banners flying and eyes raised up.

These words declare that

  • We belong to God, purchased by the blood of Jesus
  • Our assurance is in Him and the work of the cross
  • Our peace and joy are in Christ, not in our circumstances
  • The best is yet to come

We may not always perfectly submit. We may not always feel at rest, feel happy and blest, or be filled with perfect delight. But we have glimpses, don’t we? And those glimpses come most often when our hearts and minds are focused on the reality of who God is, and who we are in Christ. We experience His mercy and love in those moments.

Our salvation is through Christ alone and our sanctification is by the work of the Holy Spirit. But oh, what a sweet work it is! We are being transformed day by day into the likeness of Jesus, the One in whom we find the perfect example of submission, trust, contentment, and goodness.

Don’t just sing these words, friends. Belt them out with joy, knowing that the glimpses of goodness we enjoy as children of the Lord are but a foretaste of what is to come.

To God be all the glory.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” - 1 Peter 1:3-9

A bonus devotional on "Blessed Assurance" from Great Hymns of the Faith online course teacher and writer Gena Mayo~

Exodus 15:2 says "The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him."

In the chorus of Fanny Crosby's hymn "Blessed Assurance" she says, "This is my song."

What is her song? It's Jesus! Moses said in the verse from Exodus above that the Lord is his song.

Is Jesus your song? Does thinking of the salvation He has offered you make you want to sing? Do you feel like praising your Savior all the day long?

If not, why not?

Perhaps your song is Frank Sinatra's "I Did it My Way" or Billy Joel's "My Life." Are you living for yourself or for Him?

I encourage you to think about what Jesus has done for you and sing a song of praise to Him today. Then, let him be your song.

Gena Mayo gave her life to Jesus when she was 9 and has tried to live for him ever since. She is a wife of almost 20 years, homeschool mom of 8, and music teacher. She blogs at I Choose Joy! and Music in Our Homeschool, as well as writes music (and more) courses at Learn.MusicinOurHomeschool.com.
