How to Use and FAQ
Welcome to Beginning Music Theory for Teens!
How to use the course
- There are 72 separate "lectures" which contain one of the following: L = Lesson, ET = Ear Training, FC = Flashcards Practice, AP = App Practice, WS = Worksheet (extra worksheet practice)
The course is self-paced so you can use it however you'd like, but is written to be used for one semester (about 18 weeks long) for about 30 minutes to an hour a day. As you work on the course, it automatically keeps track of where you are. When finished with a lesson, click "Complete and Continue" to move on. You can always come back to past lessons, though.
How does a student earn high school credit with this course?
To earn 1/2 credit Fine Arts elective, do 4 "lectures" per week to finish the course in a semester.
What exactly will the student do for the course?
- Watch/listen to video lessons
- Take notes
- Practice the concepts on worksheets, flashcards, ear training exercises, and apps.
- Practice the concepts by playing on a piano keyboard and singing.
- Check your answers with the included answer sheets. Re-do any lessons where the student didn't get 100% correct.
- Test through included online quizzes with automatic grading.
Are there any Prerequisites for the Beginning Music Theory for Teens course?
No. Everything you need to learn will be taught in this course. If you've never taken any music lessons, you'll be fine starting with this course.
If my student has been taking music lessons for many years, will this course be too easy?
That's a hard question to answer because every music teacher (for piano, choir, violin, band, drums, guitar, orchestra, musical theater, etc.) is unique and puts a different emphasis on how much music theory they teach. It's never a bad idea to get back to the basics and make sure you have the foundation you'll need for any future music or music theory course/college class in music, etc. And, this course IS a prerequisite for the Advanced Music Theory course which you can find inside the Music in Our Homeschool Plus membership.
What prep work should be done before beginning the course?
- Print the music theory worksheets and put in a binder ahead of time so that everything is ready to go each day. Put all the "Answers" sheets in the back behind a divider, so they'll be easily accessible to check your work.
- Obtain a piano keyboard. (This is optional, but will be extremely helpful. A full-sized (88 keys) piano or electronic piano keyboard is fine, as is a shorter electronic keyboard. But, don't get the kind that has miniature-sized keys. Check resale and pawn shops or borrow from a friend for the semester.)
- Get these two apps: Flashnote Derby ($2.99 in Google Play Store and $4.99 in Apple App Store) and MyMusicTheory (free)

Self-Grading Quizzes:
There is a quiz at the end of each "lecture", and it's self-grading. Please study before taking the quiz because you only get one extra chance to take the quiz.
(If you'd like me to reset the quiz so you can try a third time, leave a comment right there on the lesson with that exact quiz. The comment won't show up for anyone else to see, but I'll get an email notification and can reset the quiz for you.)
Parents, contact me when your students finish the course so I can give you the student's quiz grades.
Grading the Course:
The students are to repeat each lesson, worksheet, ear training exercise, flashcard and app practice session, etc. until they have mastery of those. That will give them an "A" for the first 75% of the course. The final exam of 50 questions (2 points each) will contribute 25% of the final grade. The very last "lecture" has the answers to the final exam, so the parent or teacher may want to grade it instead of having the student do it.

Is this course only for teens?
Not necessarily, but it was specifically written for teens. Some younger students might be fine following the material. And, it is certainly appropriate for adults as well. I do have a Beginning Music Theory for Elementary course inside the Music in Our Homeschool Plus membership.
Can more than one of my own teens use it at the same time?
The upside is that the course does automatically keep track of the quiz scores for a student. The downside is that it can only do it for one student at a time.
So, the first option is to have one student complete the course, and then I can reset everything for the next student.
Or, if you'd like them to take it at the same time:
1) You purchase the course with a second account so that each student has his or her own login/account, and the online quiz grades will keep track specifically for each student. (I'll give a coupon code to get the second course 50% off).
or
2) Both students each use the same login/account, but they will need to keep track of where they left off so they each know where to start the next time they log in. And, you'll need to contact me to reset the quizzes often, since they are set to only allow two tries for one student. The students will also need to keep track of their own quiz grades since resetting them will delete older scores.
